Building a climate-positive tomato greenhouse in Sweden

With the launch of Phase 2 of Project Frövi, Swedish horticulture takes a major step forward. Selected Group and KUBO are expanding their collaboration with the construction of a new 10-hectare Ultra-Clima® greenhouse, including a 1-hectare service area. Adjacent to the first greenhouse built in Frövi, this second facility pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable, high-tech cultivation.

Built according to the Ultra-Clima® concept, the semi-closed greenhouse offers optimal control of the greenhouse climate, with significantly lower energy requirements and water consumption than traditional greenhouses. The greenhouse also carries an official footprint certificate, verified by an independent party.

According to the certification, the CO2 footprint of tomatoes from an Ultra-Clima® greenhouse is 25.4% lower than that from a conventional Venlo greenhouse (0.949 vs. 1.272 kg CO2e per kg tomatoes). By reusing captured CO2, renewable energy sources and efficient installations, Frövi 2 even offers the prospect of CO₂-negative cultivation: a greenhouse that removes more CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits.

Smart technology for sustainable choices

Frövi 2 integrates a wide range of cutting-edge systems to support a consistent and optimized growing environment:

  • Advanced screening systems for light control, energy savings, and climate regulation;

  • Integrated heating, electrical, and water systems for optimal resource efficiency;

  • Fully automated climate control, including temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels.

From greenhouse to daily operations

KUBO supports Frövi 2 not only with construction and technology but also with comprehensive operational support through Smart Growing. This includes real-time monitoring, automated process control, and remote advisory services. Local staff will be trained on the KUBO Blueprint Platform, a quality management system aligned with GLOBAL G.A.P. standards, ensuring a smooth transition to independent daily operations.

Following the successful completion of Frövi 1 in June 2024, groundwork for Frövi 2 began in May 2025. Construction starts in summer 2025 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026. Like the first greenhouse, Frövi 2 will focus on tomato production and is part of Sweden’s effort to strengthen its local food supply.

Once both greenhouses are fully operational, they are expected to supply around 10% of Sweden’s total tomato consumption, significantly reducing reliance on imports.

Implementation KUBO Companies

In our projects we like to make use of the various disciplines within the KUBO companies. This is why you will almost always find these installations/software in our projects.

KUBO Sustainable Greenhouses is overseeing the complete realization of the Frövi 2 facility. The greenhouse is being built from the ground up by KUBO’s own construction teams, under on-site supervision. This approach ensures tight quality control and alignment across all phases, from foundation to final system integration.
