Ultra-Clima® demonstrates sustainable added value in greenhouse horticulture

Our ESG manager, Bart Bossink, regularly writes updates on developments in this area within the KUBO Group. This time, it concerns the update for July 2025.

The energy transition is no longer a vision for the future, but reality. Governments worldwide are setting strict climate targets, while society is becoming increasingly critical of the environmental impact of businesses. At KUBO, we see sustainability not as an obligation, but as an opportunity to innovate, make an impact, and show the difference we can make. Our recently achieved ISO Footprint certification is tangible proof of this.

Independent validation: significantly lower CO2 emissions and energy savings

On May 1, we officially received the ISO Footprint certificate for our Ultra-Clima® greenhouses. This certification is based on a thorough analysis by the validation party Preferred by Nature, carried out on the basis of data from a comparative study between tomato cultivation in Ultra-Clima® greenhouses and traditional Venlo greenhouses. The results:

  • 18.5% less energy consumption;
  • 25.4% lower CO2 footprint;
  • 92% minder CO2 dosage.

These figures confirm that our technology not only contributes to better harvest results, but is also a serious step towards climate-friendly greenhouse horticulture. Would you like to see the details of this certification process? Please contact us via the contact form.

Ultra-Clima® vs. the market: evidence from science

In addition to the comparison with the Venlo greenhouse, we also conducted a benchmark against the national average in tomato cultivation, based on the renowned KWIN report from Wageningen University & Research. The result? Tomatoes from our Ultra-Clima® greenhouses have the lowest carbon footprint of all production methods studied. This independent substantiation provides growers worldwide with a valuable tool: a greenhouse solution that allows them to raise the bar for sustainability.

Collaboration with Underground Forest: Climate gains that go further

For us, sustainability does not stop at the greenhouse. That is why we have entered into a partnership with Underground Forest, an organization that focuses on long-term carbon storage through natural processes in the soil. Thanks to this partnership, we can assist customers in further reducing and offsetting their climate impact.

Family businesses as drivers of sustainable change

KUBO is a family business, which, according to research, makes us particularly well suited to be a leader in the sustainability movement. A report by Maastricht University, BDO, and AFAS shows that family businesses are faster and more effective at becoming sustainable than other types of organizations due to their long-term vision, regional involvement, and strong values.

What does this mean? Many of the characteristics of the highest-scoring companies in this study are reflected in our own way of working. Our focus is not on quick profits, but on a future-proof sector. Read more about our history and vision on the about us page.

Current project: Carbon reduction plan 2024

We are currently working with Holtara on the Carbon Reduction Plan for 2024. This involves collecting and analyzing our emissions data and taking steps to enable further reductions. The report is expected to be published in September.

Sustainability at KUBO is not a side issue — It is our foundation

Whether it concerns greenhouse construction, crop optimization, or climate impact, we aim to remain at the forefront through scientifically substantiated claims, transparent collaborations, and a clear course of action.
