Project Frövi 2: New footprint-certified Ultra-Clima® greenhouse by KUBO

Selected Group is expanding its investment in sustainable greenhouse cultivation in Sweden with the launch of Phase 2 of Project Frövi. In this second phase, KUBO will realize a 10-hectare Ultra-Clima greenhouse for tomatoes, including a 1-hectare service area, equipped with the latest technology and fully supported by KUBO’s SmartGrowing services. The new greenhouse will be built next to the existing greenhouse in Frövi, which was the first phase of the project.

Ultra-Clima® with proven footprint reduction

The semi closed greenhouse will be built according to the Ultra-Clima concept and carries an official carbon footprint certificate, verified by an independent third party. The certification confirms that the CO2 footprint of tomatoes grown in an Ultra-Clima greenhouse is 25.4% lower than in a traditional Venlo greenhouse (0.949 vs. 1.272 kg CO2e per kilogram of tomatoes).

In addition, the greenhouse design supports a CO2 fertilization strategy, where captured CO2 is reused to enrich the growing environment. When combined with renewable energy and efficient systems, this approach opens the door to CO2-negative cultivation, where the greenhouse removes more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. This makes Ultra-Clima not just a sustainable choice, but a climate-positive one.

Smart technology, sustainable choices

The Ultra-Clima greenhouse will be equipped with a carefully selected range of high-tech systems, designed to deliver maximum control and efficiency at every stage of the growing process.

Advanced screening systems provide optimal light control, energy savings, and climate regulation. With the right balance between the sun and insulation, the internal climate is perfectly matched to the crop’s needs, regardless of external weather conditions.

Sustainable systems for water, electrical, and heating installations are integrated to ensure maximum reliability and efficient resource use.

A fully integrated climate system controls temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels with high precision, contributing directly to a stable growing environment and increased yields.

Full Support by KUBO Smart Growing

In Project Frövi 2, KUBO not only delivers the greenhouse and its technology but also provides comprehensive operational support to the operator through its SmartGrowing program. This service ensures a successful launch and long-term operation, both on-site and remotely.

The setup and support enables real-time monitoring, automated control, and continuous optimization of all processes, from air circulation to heat recovery and ventilation.

This technical configuration forms the foundation for a data-driven, sustainable, and energy-efficient growing approach. It is fully supported by KUBO’s AutoPylot solution, where each component contributes to reducing the environmental footprint while maximizing yield per square meter, precisely what one can expect from a project where technology and sustainability go hand in hand.

The Smart Growing team will implement and train the local operator staff on the KUBO Blueprint Platform, a quality management system aligned with GLOBAL G.A.P. standards while delivering structured operational training and ensuring a smooth transition to daily operations.

The second greenhouse in Frövi  will be more than just a greenhouse, it is a shared ambition to build a sustainable, data-driven horticulture. With a strong partnership, a clear vision, and the right technology, we are taking on this challenge together.

Timeline and crop

Project Frövi 1 has been operational since early June 2024. Adjacent to the first greenhouse, a second facility - Frövi 2 - is set to be constructed. Groundworks were completed in May, and construction is scheduled to commence in a week. The Frövi 2 greenhouse is expected to be completed within 11 months, with operations projected to begin by summer 2026.

Like the existing greenhouse, Frövi 2 will focus on tomato production, contributing to increased domestic supply and reduced dependency on imports. Once both facilities are fully operational, they are projected to account for approximately 10% of Sweden’s total tomato consumption.
